Pipe relining is a way of repairing a damaged pipe without digging it up. A new pipe is formed inside the old one by inserting a resin-soaked liner and curing it in place, so the finished result is a smooth new pipe running through the shell of the original. For a homeowner the appeal is obvious: no trench through the garden, no lifted concrete and usually a faster repair than full replacement. This guide walks through how the process actually works, step by step.

Step 1: inspect the pipe with a camera

Relining starts with knowing exactly what is wrong. A plumber runs a CCTV camera through the pipe to record its condition, and the footage shows where the cracks are, how bad the corrosion is, whether roots have entered and whether the pipe has collapsed. That inspection decides whether relining is even an option, because a pipe that has collapsed or lost its shape entirely cannot simply be lined. It also gives the plumber the measurements needed for the next steps.

Step 2: clean the pipe

Before any liner goes in, the pipe has to be clean. Scale, rust, roots and debris are removed, usually with high-pressure water jetting or a mechanical cutter. The liner needs to bond to the pipe wall, and it cannot do that through a layer of sludge. Cleaning is also the step that can reveal the true extent of the damage once the buildup is stripped away. A pipe that looked manageable on camera can turn out to need more work at this point.

Step 3: measure and prepare the liner

The liner is cut to length and prepared for the specific pipe. A felt or fibreglass liner is saturated with resin, and the amount of resin and the time it takes to cure are matched to the pipe size, the temperature and the product being used. Getting this preparation right is what determines whether the cured liner forms a solid, watertight wall. It is the step where experience shows, because the resin mix and timing have to suit the conditions on the day.

Step 4: insert the liner

The prepared liner is fed into the pipe from an access point, which is usually an existing inspection opening or a small excavation at one end. It is positioned so it covers the full length of the damaged section, then inflated or expanded so it presses firmly against the pipe wall. The liner has to sit tight against the old pipe with no folds or gaps, because any air pocket at this stage becomes a weak spot in the finished repair.

Step 5: cure the liner

Curing is where the resin hardens and the liner becomes a pipe. The method varies, with hot water, steam or ultraviolet light used depending on the system, and the cure takes a set time while the liner is held in place. Once the resin has fully hardened, the liner is no longer a sleeve inside the pipe. It is the pipe. The old damaged pipe is now just the shell around it.

Step 6: carry out the final inspection

The finished repair is checked with another camera pass to confirm the liner is smooth, continuous and free of defects. The plumber looks for a full bond to the pipe wall, clean transitions at each end and no areas where the liner has lifted or wrinkled. A final inspection also confirms the restored pipe flows properly, which is the whole point of the job. Most relining carries a workmanship guarantee, and the inspection record is what that guarantee rests on.

When relining is the best option

Relining suits a pipe that is leaking, corroding or cracking but still holds its shape. It works well for pipes under buildings, driveways and established gardens, where excavation would be disruptive and expensive. It is less suitable for a pipe that has collapsed, for one that needs to be enlarged, or where the damage is so widespread that the whole run would need replacing anyway. A plumber’s camera inspection is what separates the pipes that can be relined from the ones that cannot.

Relining is generally cheaper than full replacement once the cost of excavation, reinstatement of gardens and paving, and the time involved are counted. The price for a relined section is usually quoted per metre and depends on the length of the damaged pipe, its diameter and how accessible the access points are. As an indicative range, homeowners commonly see quotes of a few hundred dollars per metre, but the exact figure varies enough with the job that a site inspection is the only reliable way to get a number.

Pipe relining replaces open-cut repair with a camera check, a clean, a liner, a cure and a final inspection. For a pipe that is a good candidate, it is less disruptive and often less expensive than digging it up, and it restores the pipe to a smooth, full-flow condition that can last for decades. The caveat is that the process is only as good as the preparation and the cure, which is why the job belongs to a licensed plumber with the right equipment rather than a shortcut.
