Wi-Fi 7: What It Is, Whether You Need It, and What Actually Speeds Up Your Home

Wi-Fi 7 is the fastest home Wi-Fi standard yet, and for most Australian homes it is the wrong thing to buy right now. The bigger bottleneck is usually the router you already own. This guide explains the standard, why your fast NBN plan may still feel slow, and the checklist that actually fixes it.
What Wi-Fi 7 actually is
Wi-Fi 7, also known as 802.11be, is the newest generation of Wi-Fi. The standard was finalised in 2024, and new phones, laptops and routers now ship with it built in. It offers higher top speeds, better handling of many devices at once and lower lag than the previous generation.
Those improvements matter most in three situations: a gigabit-class internet connection, heavy local file transfers between devices on your home network, and high-bitrate streaming or gaming. If none of those describe your household, the extra speed of Wi-Fi 7 mostly sits unused.
The naming is the confusing part. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E came before it, and each generation is a real step forward, but the step only shows up when the rest of the setup can keep up. A new router does not make a slow plan fast.
The 2026 context: your NBN got faster, your router did not
Australian broadband went through a genuine speed-up through 2025 and 2026. Free NBN speed upgrades began in September 2025, new 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps tiers arrived, and by 2026 more than a third of plans were 500 Mbps or above.
That is where the gap opened. A router with a 100 Mbps WAN port caps the whole house at roughly 100 Mbps no matter what its Wi-Fi label claims, and an old Wi-Fi 4 or 5 router radios data at speeds well below what a modern plan can deliver. People upgrade their plan, run a speed test, and blame the provider when the real limit is the box in the cupboard.
The practical point: once your plan is reasonably fast, the router matters more than the internet service provider. Fixing the router is usually cheaper and more effective than chasing a faster plan.
Do you need Wi-Fi 7?
The honest decision rule is narrow. Wi-Fi 7 earns its keep when three things are true at once: you are on a gigabit-plus plan, your main devices support Wi-Fi 7, and you do heavy local file transfers, high-bitrate streaming or serious gaming.
For everyone else, Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is the smarter value upgrade. Both are far cheaper, mature, and more than enough for typical 100 to 500 Mbps plans and the devices most households actually own. And if the current router is genuinely old, almost any modern router is a large step up, regardless of which generation you choose.
The same test applies to home office gear as to the router itself. The site has weighed which remote work tools actually earn their keep, and networking equipment is no different: buy for the job you do, not the specification on the box.
What actually speeds up your home
Before spending on a new standard, run through the checklist that fixes most slow homes.
Check the WAN port. If the router only has a 100 Mbps port, every plan above that is throttled. Look for a 1 Gbps port, and ideally 2.5 Gbps or higher if you are on a gigabit plan.
Move the router. A unit buried in a cupboard, behind the TV or on the floor in a corner covers a fraction of the house. Central, off the floor and in the open is measurably better.
Use mesh for dead zones. In a larger or double-storey home, a mesh system spreads coverage where a single router cannot reach. That is a coverage fix, not a speed fix, and it is worth more than a faster Wi-Fi label in a room that drops out.
Upgrade the old device. If the laptop or phone is ten years old, no router fixes it. The weakest link in the chain sets the speed you actually experience.

What it costs
Prices change with retail cycles, so treat these as order-of-magnitude ranges rather than quotes. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E routers are the budget-sensible step, covering most homes well for a modest outlay. Wi-Fi 7 routers start at a higher entry price and climb further for mesh bundles with multiple units.
The value test is simple. Compare the price difference against what the faster standard will actually deliver on your plan and with your devices. For most households, the cheaper generation wins that comparison, and the money saved is better spent on a mesh unit for the dead zone or on nothing at all.
Buy for the plan you have
The verdict is the same for most homes: buy for the plan you have and the devices you own, not the sticker on the box. Wi-Fi 7 is real and it is the future, but the future can wait.
If the router is old, replace that first. Check the WAN port, move the unit somewhere central, add mesh if the house drops out, and only then consider whether a Wi-Fi 7 router is worth the premium. In most cases it is not, at least not yet.
