Private Browsing, the Honest Version: What Incognito Mode Does and Doesn’t Hide
The short version
- What it does: incognito, or private browsing, keeps this session’s history, cookies and form data off the device once you close the window.
- What it doesn’t do: it does not hide you from websites, your internet provider, your employer’s network or the government, and it does not stop tracking or ads.
- What it is actually for: a shared or public computer, a surprise you do not want in the history, or a second account. Not a privacy cloak.
The word “incognito” quietly promises more than it delivers. Most people open a private window for one of two reasons: to keep something off the shared family history, or to feel invisible online. One of those is what the feature is for. The other is not, and the gap between the two is worth understanding, because it decides how much you should trust that little icon.
What incognito mode does
The feature has a different name in different browsers. Chrome calls it Incognito. Firefox and Safari call it a Private Window. Edge calls it InPrivate. Different names, same basic behaviour, so this article treats the two terms as the same thing.
What is actually different in a private session is a short list. Once you close the private window, the browser does not keep the history from that session on that device. It does not keep the cookies for the next session. And it does not remember autofill or form data, so the search box and the checkout page come up empty next time.
That is the whole of what the feature does. Close the window and the browser treats you as someone who was never there. Sites you visited will not show up in the history, and you will need to sign in again the next time you visit them.
That is the useful, true half of the feature, and for the right job it works well.
What it doesn’t do
This is the part most people miss. A private window does not make you anonymous. In most browsers, and typically on any device, the following stay visible even when you are browsing privately.
The website you visit still sees your IP address. That is how the site knows roughly where you are and how it delivers the page to you. Private browsing does not change that, and the site can still record your visit.
Your internet provider can still see the sites you visit. The traffic still travels over your connection, so the company that provides it can see where it is going. An employer or school that runs the network you are on can see it for the same reason.
If you sign in to a Google, Microsoft or other account inside the private window, that browsing is linked to your account and can be saved. Signing in switches off most of the privacy the window otherwise gives you.
Extensions you have installed can also still see the pages you visit in a private window. Most browsers make that true by default, and you would have to change the settings to stop it.
Private browsing also does not stop advertising. The sites you visit can still place cookies during that session, follow what you look at and show you targeted ads. The difference is that those cookies are cleared when you close the window, so the profile does not carry over to your next session. It is a fresh start, not an invisible one.
None of this is a reason to avoid private browsing. It is a reason to use it for what it is, rather than for what the name hints at.
What it is actually for
The genuinely useful cases are everyday ones. A shared family computer is the classic: everyone uses the same login, and private browsing keeps one person’s searches out of the history the next person sees. A public or borrowed device, such as a library computer or a friend’s laptop, is the same idea with higher stakes.
Shopping for a gift, or planning a surprise on a device someone else uses, is a smaller version of the same thing. Logging into a second account without disrupting the one you are already signed into is another clean use. So is keeping a sensitive search, such as a health question or a legal query, out of the shared history.
The honest principle to hold onto: private browsing is a screen between you and the next person who uses the device. It is not a screen between you and the internet.
When you need more than incognito
If the concern is tracking and ads, the levers that actually move the needle are different ones. A private search engine does not build a profile of your searches. Blocking trackers stops a large share of the ads that follow you around. Not staying signed in means the sites you visit cannot tie your activity to an account. And for some people the biggest lever is the device itself, not the browser settings. What incognito mode is actually for
The honest verdict is simple. Use private browsing for the shared device, the borrowed computer, the surprise and the second account. It is good at all of those and it costs nothing.
Do not use it as a cloak. The moment you genuinely need to be anonymous online, incognito is not the tool. It never was, and no browser setting changes that.
If you truly need to move around the web without being seen, the honest move is to reach for something built for that job, not for a private window. The private window is for privacy between you and the next person who sits at the keyboard. For everything else, it is the wrong tool, and knowing that is the point.
